The Commonwealth Games - Hygiene and Hurdles

9th December 2010 by The Albany Team

The Commonwealth Games in October, made headlines before the games had even started for all the wrong reasons.

It’s fairly common ahead of major sporting events like the Olympics and the World Cup, for worries to emerge that the host nation and its venues won't be ready in time.  Indeed, there was plenty of media coverage ahead of this year's football World Cup in South Africa and there are already fears being voiced in advance of the co-hosting of Euro 2012 between Poland and the Ukraine.

However the poor quality and cleanliness of the accommodation and sports facilities did shock many of the athletes with several top British athletes choosing to not attend the games.

During the Games many of the Team GB athletes fell ill, with England officials suggesting in the media that the source of the illness may be linked to poor hygiene at the athlete’s village.

Although the Deli Games are an extreme example of unhygienic and potentially unsafe facilities, building owners and employers have an obligation to provide and maintain clean and healthy environments.  Indeed, having a healthy environment is a vital, if often under estimated part of running a successful business.  Having unhygienic facilities puts you at risk of your insurances being invalidated, enforced closure of your business or even criminal prosecution if you are found to be in breach of health and safety regulations.

Albany offer companies a comprehensive free compliance survey to help businesses take that first step towards evaluating what services you need and managing any risk.
